Missouri Show-Me Green Sales Tax Holiday

The biggest weekend for purchasing appliances in Missouri is here!  If you’re looking to buy a new appliance, take advantage of savings between April 19 and April 25. This is the week that Missouri is holding their Show-Me Green Sales Tax Holiday. During this time, if you buy a certified Energy Star appliance in Missouri, you will not have to pay any state sales tax.

What is the Show-Me Green Tax Holiday?

Starting in 2009, the Show-Me Green Sales Tax Holiday is a week in April where retail sales of qualifying certified Energy Star appliances are exempt from Missouri state sales tax, up to $1,500 per appliance. There is no limit to how many appliances you can buy, but only $1,500 per appliance is allowed to be exempt.

What Purchases Qualify for the Exemption?

Missouri Department of Revenue states that any of the following certified Energy appliances qualify for the holiday:

  • Clothes washers
  • Clothes dryers
  • Water heaters
  • Dishwashers
  • Air conditioners
  • Furnaces
  • Refrigerators
  • Freezers
  • Heat pumps

Also, you do not need to be a Missouri resident to take advantage of these savings. If you do live in Missouri but would like to purchase an appliance online, you can still take advantage of the Show-Me Green Sales Tax Holiday. If you purchase a qualifying appliance online and the transaction is complete during the sales tax holiday, it will be exempt from the state sales tax.

What About Local Sales Tax?

Although purchases of these items will be exempt from state sales tax, Missouri lets the cities, counties, and districts decide whether they will participate in the holiday or not. To find out whether your local city, county, or district is participating, you can check the Missouri Department of Revenue website. Even if there aren’t any participating jurisdictions near you, it could still be a great way to save on the 4.225% state sales tax rate.
