Withum Enhances Commitment to Diversity in Early Career Pipeline

It is the Firm’s mission to be a place where underrepresented talent and emerging professionals can show up to work every day as their authentic selves. Withum invests heavily in early career pipeline initiatives and aligns with industry partners to ease the barriers that have historically impacted access to the profession.

Withum partner and Market Leader of Outsourced Accounting Systems and Services (OASyS), Nina Chmura, began the OASyS Intro to Accounting Day, which introduces local high school students to the firm and the accounting profession. A group of students are welcomed to the Red Bank, New Jersey office and are given a tour complete with breakfast and Q&A session. By striking an interest in accounting at the high school level, students who hadn’t previously considered the accounting field may choose to major in it—increasing the steadily falling number of accounting majors across institutions. Withum has also recently hired three high school interns at the Red Bank office. As part of their school curriculum, these students will work 3-6 hours per week with the client accounting services team, learning valuable professional skills, doing real accounting work, and earning compensation.

At the collegiate level, students often run into hurdles regarding the price of tuition. Withum is a proud co-sponsor of the George Willie Scholarship, granted through the AICPA and given to an ethnically diverse student majoring in accounting or a similar field. Withum will grant an internship to one of the ten students who was also granted $10,000 in scholarship funds. Withum also piloted the CPA Pathways Program with Seton Hall University, aimed at lessening the financial burden on 5th-year accounting students. While in the program, Withum will contribute to the cost of the student’s 5th year of school, while also offering the students a part-time position at the firm, earning a salary. Additionally, Withum sponsored five students to attend the Accounting Scholars Leadership Workshop, an annual AICPA program for accounting students aiming for their CPA license.

Withum is also dedicated to the retention and success of emerging professionals and underrepresented talent. The Firm sponsored 12 team members to attend the We’re About Success—a program by the AICPA and Howard University that gives ethnic minorities early in their careers the tools, resources, and support needed to navigate the industry and advance to leadership positions.

The We’re About Success program gave me the opportunity to network with like-minded professionals around the country. It created a resourceful environment where people I share similar backgrounds with focused on building leadership traits within ourselves and honing in on our soft skills.
