We are sometimes overwhelmed with clutter. Sometimes paper and, more lately, digital. The difference is that you can see the piles of paper while the digital clutter lurks in your computer. No matter what we do, it seems to grow and grow and grow. This can not only cost time and money but can set traps for you that could become quite costly, rob you of funds and cause countless added time to straighten out. Clutter costs can put your financial security in danger!

This Thursday, Ed Mendlowitz, CPA, will present a virtual program on Decluttering Your Financial Affairs. This is part of the continuing Take A Business Break series for the East Brunswick Public Library.

This is a repeat program based on requests I’ve received but will cover added material about digital clutter and ways to protect yourself from hacking, digital theft and identity and credit card theft. Besides the new ways clutter is growing, I will cover some ways to reduce clutter and give you greater control over your financial affairs. You’ll hear about financial records you no longer need but also about some that must be retained, how long you should keep your tax return data, what to do when you do not have your cost basis, ways to simplify recordkeeping and how to safely and securely dispose of records and some data whose importance is usually overlooked. Some very important records you might no longer have and how to easily duplicate them, why and ways to consider liquidating some mutual funds, why you should not terminate life insurance policies you no longer need and what to do with custodian accounts for grown children and living trusts for yourself.

The presentation will be at Noon on Zoom, but you must register in advance.
