There is no better time to share what I love about public accounting than on Valentine’s Day. Following is a list of 14 things I love about public accounting.

14 Reasons Why I Love Public Accounting

  1. I love tax season. What profession can you get to interact with every client you have, get updated on their goings on, share their dreams and goals (since most of these have a financial element) and also get paid for it? I have many 40 and 50-year relationships with some tax clients.
  2. I love helping clients manage and run their businesses better. It is a thrill when I see suggestions I’ve made become reality and make a difference in my clients’ lives and also in the lives of their personnel and stakeholders.
  3. I love helping clients define their goals and working out a plan for them to achieve them. This really changes lives and makes people much more financially secure.
  4. I love the engagement, interchange, and challenge of dealing with entrepreneurs and business leaders in solving current problems and establishing long-range strategic plans.
  5. I love assisting in the planning for my clients’ growth, anticipating what could go wrong and then working out and implementing how those problems could be avoided.
  6. I love being called first before the start of any planning of the new and innovative opportunities a client wants to consider.
  7. I love reviewing clients’ systems and controls, showing where improvements can be implemented and, when necessary, being engaged to follow through to make those changes become a reality.
  8. I love collaborating with colleagues and sharing ideas for managing our practices better.
  9. I love the collegiality and friendships among my partners and senior managers.
  10. I love the challenges of keeping current and being on the cusp of new tax laws and accounting promulgations and being the first to uncover loopholes and ways to put the new rules to use.
  11. I love having to be able to quickly react to ever-changing economic conditions and guiding clients to adapt to them.
  12. I love mentoring young staff and teaching them what they need to know to replace me on most of the work I do for a client.
  13. I love that while I train staff to move themselves up, I am able to keep the one-on-one with the clients with my continual checking in and providing them with suggestions to consider on how to make themselves more financially independent and secure.
  14. I love the financial rewards. I did not acquire obscene wealth, but I made enough to provide my living, fully fund my retirement account, have funds to grow my infrastructure, and even have some profits. That’s not too shabby!

I love what I did and still do and the career I had. I hope you feel likewise about your career.

Also, on Thursday, February 15, from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm, I will be presenting a requested repeat webinar on the Financial Affairs of the U.S. Presidents after Leaving the Presidency on Zoom for the East Brunswick Public Library. It is free but you must register to attend.

Happy Valentine’s Day,
Ed
