State CPA Society News & Updates: Jan. 2024

The Illinois CPA Society is hosting a Corporate Finance Conference. The conference is both virtual and in-person and will take place on March 20, 2024 at the Illinois CPA Society Learning Plaza. The cost is $400 for Society members is $400 with a nonmember cost of $490.

The New Jersey Society of CPAs recently announced the appointment of three NJCPA members to the New Jersey State Board of Accountancy. The appointees are:

• John Coiro, CPA, executive director at Ernst & Young LLP and a past president of the NJCPA
• Robert A. Fodera, CPA, a retired partner of Baker Tilly US, LP and treasurer of the NJCPA Scholarship Fund
• Nancy Sbrolla, CPA, RMA, partner at Ford, Scott & Associates LLC and a past president of the NJCPA Atlantic/Cape May Chapter.

TheKansas Society of CPAs hosted the 2023 INSPIRE Business Camp for Kansas high school students.

The camp is designed to introduce Kansas high school students to the vast array of career opportunities in the accounting profession. It is a collaborative effort incorporating Kansas high school educators, collegiate faculty and students, future employers, and impactful speakers in the business sector, specifically accounting.

The camp started with insights from Whitney Beaver, Vice President – Chief Financial Officer of the Kansas City Royals. She shared the journey that introduced her to the accounting profession and ultimately landed her a position with the Kansas City Royals. A panel of college students followed, providing a different perspective on entering the accounting profession. They shared their personal experiences and insights and answered questions from the group.

Participants then took a lap around the Accounting Career Track to see where a career in accounting starts and where it can lead. The track consisted of booths where students could talk to collegiate faculty, students, and future employers. Educational and professional representatives also joined the student groups throughout the day to simulate the sense of community and camaraderie within the accounting profession. In addition, their high school business teachers accompanied them to the camp so conversations could continue and expand upon returning to the classroom.

Team building through Interactive games and challenges was also integral to the day. Students were assigned groups at random, so they got the opportunity to meet and work with new acquaintances. The day culminated in future-ready round tables to identify takeaways and next steps for the students as they account for their futures.

The Ohio Society of CPAs recently announced that OSCPA President and CEO Scott Wiley has been appointed to the Ohio Small Business Advisory Council. The primary responsibility of the nine-member council is to advise the current local administration on rules and regulations and help identify potentially unnecessary burdens on Ohio job creators.
