Financial Affairs of the U.S. Presidents after they left the Presidency

Forty-four men have been president of the United States; eight died in office, leaving 36 that survived their terms. I will not include President Trump because I do not want any politics injected into the program, so 35 presidents will be discussed. President Biden is the 46th and present president and is not included.

One became a drunk, two bankrupt, one a traitor, one a Congressman, one a Senator and one the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Many sold their name and notoriety, and some became faculty members, remained involved in politics and tried to run again for president while one succeeded in winning a second non-consecutive term, and many built libraries to document their accomplishments. One had his postal mail franking privileges removed, one had his army rank restored so he could receive a pension, and another pushed to have a law enacted six years after he left the presidency so that ex-presidents, including him, would receive a pension and have certain expenses reimbursed. One thing they all had in common after their terms were completed is that they no longer lived rent-free in government housing, and they had to make a living.

This program will look at their financial affairs, investments and the everyday financial and health problems they encountered and how some of their final days were spent. Some of their problems can also be related to issues many are confronted with today without the celebrity status former presidents had. This will be an interesting yet practical trip through history.

I will be presenting this free program on Thursday, February 17, at Noon on Zoom. The program is sponsored by the East Brunswick Public Library and Withum. It is free but you must register to attend. Here is a link:
