Clutter grows and doesn’t dissipate, no matter how hard we try. Financial clutter can cost money, waste opportunities and time, and lessen the feeling of monetary security.

This Thursday, Ed Mendlowitz, CPA, will present a virtual program on Decluttering Your Financial Affairs. This is part of the continuing Take A Business Break series for the East Brunswick Public Library.

Covered will be some effortless ways to reduce clutter and give you greater control over your financial affairs. You’ll hear about financial records you no longer need but also about some that must be retained, how long you should keep your tax return data, what to do when you do not have your cost basis, ways to simplify recordkeeping and how to safely and securely dispose of records. I will discuss some data whose importance is usually overlooked and some very important records you might no longer have and how to easily duplicate them, why to consider liquidating DRIPs (Dividend Reinvestment Plans) and some mutual funds, and why you should not terminate life insurance policies you no longer need, but sell them instead, and what to do with custodian accounts for grown children and living trusts for yourself. The discussion will include paper as well as digital records.

The presentation will be at Noon on Zoom, but you must register in advance.
