The Akron chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) is sponsoring a webinar on white-collar crime – “Low Man on the Totem Pole – How I Became a White-Collar Criminal.” The webinar is on Wednesday, October 19, 2022, from 6:30 – 8 pm Eastern. Registration is at this link.
I cannot emphasize enough what an excellent webinar this is for students to think about ethical choices. Please share this opportunity with colleagues/students. The webinar message applies to accounting majors – and all business majors.
Helen Sharkey speaks about her experiences with honesty. She talks about her excitement when she landed her “dream job” at Dynegy, only to be followed by dismay when she began to doubt the ethics of what they were doing and then her complete loss of faith in the company. She details her gut-wrenching fear when she realized that the Justice Department was targeting her, her struggle with the decision to plead guilty, the shame of being branded a felon and her time behind bars.
I have heard Helen speak and her story is compelling. The first time I heard her speak was in a room of 300 people – and you could have heard a pin drop for the entire time she spoke. This is a message that our students need to hear – and, really, all of us.
If you want to have your students attend this webinar, know that students will be able to download their CPE certificate at the conclusion of the webinar as proof that they attended for the entire time and answered all the polling questions.
The students in one class that I teach are required to attend this webinar; students in my other classes earn extra credit for attending.
This session qualifies for up to 1.5 hours of CPE for CPAs and CMAs. Advance registration is required. Members and non-members are welcome; there is no cost.
