In the climb from contributor to leader, the rules quietly change. But if you’re aiming for the summit, the air gets thinner, and what got you here won’t be enough to get you to the top. 🗻 What made you successful early in your finance career—technical accuracy, sharp analysis, flawless execution—won’t be what carries you to the next level. The merchant-card network relationship can be complicated. It’s a complication that’s persisted long before EMV, but one that EMV seems to have intensified. And it’s a complication that merchants now claim has cost them money in the form of chargebacks. To help us get a better understanding of one card network’s point of view on this claim, as well as EMV’s evolution seven months in, Karen Webster recently spoke with Stephanie Ericksen, VP of Global Risk Products at Visa.
There was an incident in 2013 in which nonprofit firm MusicBrainz sent a cake — yes, the edible dessert — to Amazon’s finance department to satirically celebrate the three-year mark of an unpaid invoice. “Dear Amazon: Congratulations on 3rd Anniversary of invoice #144!” the icing on the cake exclaimed. The story went viral and, for a brief moment, uncovered the challenges that small suppliers face when trying to get paid on time by their large, corporate buyers.

Automation and AI aren't just technical upgrades, they’re cultural shifts which can challenge identities. That’s why change management isn’t a side project—it’s the foundation. In finance, where precision and process rule, navigating change can feel especially disruptive.

The judge in Uber ‘s New York anti-trust case has ordered the release of documents to determine if the private investigators hired by the ride-hailing service gathered information about its competitors in a fraudulent manner. It’s that time of year again. Time for sun, fun … and tuition payment processing? Yes, you read that correctly. Summer break is upon us and though some have officially retreated to relaxation and vacation mode, for universities and colleges the work is just beginning. With the fall term quickly approaching, these institutions are preparing for the wave of student application and tuition payments coming from international students and their financial institutions overseas.
When most people worry about computers taking over the future, they are more likely than not reacting to the sort of sci-fi doomsday scenario they see in movies like “The Terminator” or “The Matrix.” For those who are unfamiliar, the plot for such a scenario involves human beings building computers that become self-aware and decide immediately to overthrow and enslave us.

As a general rule, most startups aren’t too happy when the regulator comes around, and it is rarely indicative of good news. Uber had many wonderful years of asking for forgiveness instead of permission and managed to build a worldwide ridesharing empire on the strength of that conviction. These days, however, Uber is spending its time, increasingly, in court and has even managed to allow things to break down completely in Austin such that it doesn’t operate there anymore.

Gaming console company Atari is venturing out into manufacturing IoT devices as it looks into expanding beyond mobile and casino game offerings.
